9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Our Lady ofLourdesParishCenter,5333 East Washington Street,Indianapolis

Did your old house come in the mail? During the first half of the twentieth century thousands of Americans built homes from plans sold by mail-order companies, including Sears and Montgomery Ward. Some houses arrived as complete kits – timber, bricks, fixtures, and all.

On October 1, Some Assembly Required: A Mail-Order House Experience offers immersion in pattern book and catalog homes. The day includes lectures, lunch and tours of catalog and pattern-book homes inIndianapolis’s historicIrvington neighborhood.

Featured speaker John Crosby Freeman, nationally known “color doctor,” discusses period paint colors for early twentieth-century catalog homes. Architectural historian and author Paul Diebold’s overview will offer clues to identifying catalog and pattern book houses.

The program includes one owner’s account of restoring three Irvington houses, an expert’s take on Lustrons (factory-made all-steel houses), and a talk on the little-known Architectural Guild of Indianapolis, an architects’ service that offered ready-made house plans in the 1930s.

The experience ends with a tour of four Irvingtonhomes, including a Gustav Stickley catalog house and Sears’ Osborn and Saratoga models.

Sponsored by Sherwin-Williams.

Cost: $45 per person, $40 per member of Indiana Landmarks. Includes lunch, tours, and all materials.

Check out this article about Indianapolis LISC grants in Irvington, featuring George Thomas Florist and Amandula Henry of the Irvington Development Organization.

via WishTV:

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – If you travel along Washington Street through Irvington, you’ll notice changes throughout the year.

“So many people pass through and they don’t know they’re going through a really cool neighborhood,” said Amandula Henry from the Irvington Development Organization.

It was once an area of sleepy sidewalks with vacant storefronts.

“When we acquired the building it looked a lot different,” said Keith Kleinmaier, president of Retail Realty.

Then there was a vision and a commitment.

“We were looking to change how we can grow our business,” said Michael Benson from George Thomas Florist.

Vacant for several years, the building now has new life thanks to a neighborhood florist. George Thomas Florist made the move to Irvington six months ago, after being at a prior location for 20 years.

“We felt like Irvington was the perfect area to connect with the community and it’s been the best move we ever made,” said Benson.

“When we acquired the building it looked a lot different and we knew as a new building owner we didn’t necessarily have the funds to go out and fix up the outsides,” said Kleinmaier.

That’s where the Irvington Development Organization stepped in, providing grants to make over the facade.

“When you’re starting up your business, you’d like to have a little bit extra cash to put into the inside of your property and so your face is probably the first things people see,” said Henry.

The grant money is provided by LISC, which stands for Local Initiatives Support Corporation. It’s a national organization with an office in Indianapolis. It helps transform distressed neighborhoods into healthy ones. LISC has partnered with many Indianapolis communities like Fall Creek Place and Fountain Square. Most recently, LISC worked with the near east side and the Legacy Project, which was a key part of the city’s Super Bowl bid for 2012.

The building’s owners, which houses the florist, received $40,000 in grants which the owner matched in order to qualify. It’s a good chunk of change to update and preserve a decades-old site.

“Since Irvington is a historic district, we need to go through the proper channels to make sure what we want to do is approved in the community, is approved look for the historic district,” said Kleinmaier.

There’s more to come in Irvington. This stretch of Washington Street will become pedestrian-friendly with the addition of more walkways and sidewalks, dotted with planters and trees along this main thoroughfare.
